Arcachon is a commune in the South-West of France, a sub-prefecture of the département of the Gironde, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This seaside resort was created in 1857 by the detachment of part of the commune of La Teste-de-Buch. An integral part of the former province of Gascogne, it falls within the boundaries of the Pays de Buch, the Landes de Gascogne and the forêt des Landes.
A little history
Until the beginning of the 19th century, Arcachon consisted of a few fishermen's and resin-tappers' huts on the edge of the bassin d'Arcachon. Louis XVI having intended to establish a military port in the baie d'Arcachon, it was first necessary to stabilise the dune sands. The naval engineer Charlevoix de Villiers studied the matter and proposed, in 1779, the use of plantations. The victim of intrigues, he fell from favour.
