Orchies is a French commune situated in the Nord department (59), in the Hauts-de-France region in Flemish Romagna. The town and its surroundings, French since 1668, have belonged to the county of Flandre, the kingdom of France, the Spanish Netherlands and the Southern Netherlands (or Belgica Regia in Latin). The town is renowned for being the world capital of chicory as it is in this town that the company Leroux, world leader in this product, is based.
A little history
Before the French Revolution, Orchies was made up of various fiefs that could grant their owner the title of seigneur. This is the case of the terre du Metz, situated in Orchies, which was, on 3 December 1622, by letters issued in Bruxelles (the region was then Spanish), erected into a viscounty seigneury for the benefit of Philippe de Bassecourt, a gentleman residing in the village d'Auchy, of which the Bassecourt were seigneurs for a century. In 1297 Philippe le Bel made his entry into the town during his campaign against the rebellious comte de Flandre. Orchies was subsequently attached to the royal domain in 1305 by the traité d'Athis-sur-Orge (this is the Transport de Flandre).
