Douai is a French commune situated in the Nord department in the Hauts-de-France region, more precisely in the south of Flandre romane. Throughout its history, it has belonged successively to the kingdom of France, to the Pays-Bas espagnols and to the Pays-Bas méridionaux (in Latin Belgica Regia). Together with Lille and the towns of the former mining basin of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, it forms a metropolitan area of nearly 3.8 million inhabitants, known as the aire métropolitaine de Lille.
A little history
Douai is a medieval creation arising from singular natural conditions but above all from its position as a hinge between the kingdom of France and the comté de Flandre. On an island in the Scarpe, near the ford that allowed the river to be crossed, two nuclei formed the focal points of the town's development. The medieval period was one of great prosperity for Douai, stemming from its commercial activities (the sale of grain) and its craft activities (cloth-making), as well as from the autonomy granted by the Comte de Flandre, which gave the town the power to govern itself. At its peak, the city had between 10,000 and 15,000 inhabitants.
