With 63,000 inhabitants across 2,746 hectares, it was one of the 9 new towns decided upon by the government in France to relieve pressure on nearby major cities (in this case Lille), a status it lost in 1983, the work having been deemed complete.
A little history
The history of Villeneuve-d'Ascq is bound up with the shared story of the three villages of Annappes, Ascq and Flers from which it was formed. Whatever the era, a few constants mark the history of these villages, a rural way of life in former times (the town is now very urban), beset by epidemics, famine and war. The first known passage of man across what is now the territory of Villeneuve-d'Ascq is attested by a fragment of a polished flint axe, found in the 1980s in the grounds of the école Saint-Adrien in Annappes. It is estimated to date from around 2000 BC.
