Marcq-en-Barœul covers 14 km², lies between 16 and 51 m above sea level and had 40,184 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Marcq-en-Barœul is a French commune situated in the Nord department in the Hauts-de-France region, forming part of the Métropole européenne de Lille. Its inhabitants are called les Marcquois and les Marcquoises. Historically a village of market gardeners and horticulturalists, Marcq-en-Barœul experienced economic and industrial growth in the 19th century with the textile industry and significant commercial activity.
A little history
The town was initially a sparsely inhabited area between the Atrébates and Ménapiens peoples. Then, following the Roman conquest by Jules César, the town was colonised, as evidenced by the discovery of a Gallo-Roman villa unearthed near the Marque (the river that has since become a canal) in 1965. The town, like the rest of the region, was subsequently invaded by Germanic peoples. In the Middle Ages, the commune became the hunting ground of the Carolingian kings.
