Tourcoing is a French commune situated in the département du Nord, in Hauts-de-France, on the border with Belgium. Nicknamed « la cité du Broutteux », the town is part of the Métropole européenne de Lille, of which it is one of the urban centres. With 98,772 inhabitants, it is the third largest town in the Hauts-de-France region, behind Lille and Amiens.
A little history
In 1130, the first church, dedicated to saint Vaast (which would later become the église Saint-Christophe), was built. The seigneurie de Tourcoing, which consists of an agricultural market town whose inhabitants supplemented their income by producing drapery, barely survived the ravages of the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion. In 1360, its inhabitants obtained a royal seal attesting to the quality of their cloth. In 1491, Maximilien d'Autriche, who then held dominion over the comté de Flandre, granted it a free fair.
