A little history
At the origins of the current commune of La Madeleine, from as early as the beginning of the 13th century, though they were doubtless older still, there were a small number of hamlets and named places, whose very names have today disappeared. These were le Vert-Pire, which could be situated close to the present-day Romarin, le Riez (meaning "the fallow land"), which corresponds today to the town centre (town hall, church), Waudringhien, which Vauban's military constructions caused to disappear at the end of the 17th century, and finally Berkem, more set apart, bordered by the Deûle. One should also add the faubourg de Courtrai, absorbed by the city of Lille, partially so under Philippe le Bel, who built the château de Courtrai there.
