Montcornet is a French commune situated in the département of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region, at the confluence of the Serre and the Hurtaut. It is the site of the bataille de Montcornet of the Second World War, where Colonel Charles de Gaulle notably distinguished himself, and it is home to one of the fortified churches of Thiérache, the église Saint-Martin, listed as a monument historique.
A little history
The town of Montcornet, built on the left bank of the Serre, is of very ancient origin, being situated at the intersection of the Roman roads from Laon to Charleville-Mézières and from Reims to Bavay. Montcornet was a Gallo-Roman castrum, a fortified town. The voie d'Antonin le Pieux under the reign of Diocletian around 280 proves that it was already an important historical point in ancient Thiérache. In former times, the region was almost entirely covered in woodland. The men who lived there raised livestock, which they fed on acorns from oak trees and other fruits of the forest.
