Montagnac [mɔ̃.ta.ɲak], in Occitan Montanhac [mun.ta.'ɲak], is a French commune situated in the south of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Hérault, the Boyne, the ruisseau de Nègue Vaques, the rivière de Gourdouman, the ruisseau de la Font du Loup, the ruisseau d'Ensigaud, the ruisseau des Coquillades, the ruisseau des Sacristains and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (the « plaine de Villeveyrac-Montagnac ») and three natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The chapelle Saint-Martin is mentioned in 847. With a Protestant population, the town was devastated during the Wars of Religion. The château de Lavagnac was dismantled in the 17th century on the orders of Richelieu and rebuilt to the taste of the day. It is currently the subject of an enormous tourism project (golf, residences) which has won prizes at the International and European property awards.
