A little history
Period prior to the bastide. The sarcophagus discovered on a site called Le Gleysa is evidence of an occupation predating the creation of the bastide. A hamlet formed around a castle existed before its foundation. Foundation of the bastide in the 13th century. Miélan is one of those new towns called "bastide" that were founded in the 13th and 14th centuries in the South-West of France in a context of demographic growth and the assertion of royal power. Like other settlements, and in the hope of a promising future, its name was inspired by that of one of the greatest capitals of medieval Europe, Milan.
