Melun (pronounced) is a French commune situated in the département of Seine-et-Marne, of which it is the prefecture, in the région of Île-de-France. It is the third most populous town in the département after Meaux and Chelles and before Pontault-Combault.
A little history
Weapons and stone implements found in the town and its surroundings suggest that it is probable that Melun was the seat of a population settlement in the most ancient times. The position of the island, which made defence so easy, and the proximity of the forests must have made it a sought-after location. The town formed part of the territory of the Sénons, it was enclosed within the île Saint-Étienne and connected to the banks by two bridges. It was an important Gaulish stronghold which was nonetheless taken with ease and sacked, despite the destruction of the bridges, by Titus Labienus in 53 BC.
