Brie-Comte-Robert (pronounced [bʁi kɔ̃t ʁɔ.bɛʁ]), known locally as Brie, is an Île-de-France commune situated in the west of the département of Seine-et-Marne. The historical capital of the Brie française, the commune sits on the edge of the plateau de la Brie and possesses a medieval heritage of character, several elements of which are listed as monuments historiques. It hosts well-known events such as the fête médiévale and the fête des Roses. Since the 1980s, the town has held three flowers out of four in the concours des villes et villages fleuris.
A little history
During construction works on the zone d'activité du Midi de la Plaine, several sites and traces of occupation dating from Prehistory to the end of Antiquity were discovered across an area of 34 hectares. Two distinct groups were identified, consisting of two rural settlements that were the subject of preventive archaeological excavations carried out from February to June 2008. The excavations were divided into two zones. The first, covering 7,000 m², was intended to study the protohistoric site, and the second, covering 28,000 m², encompassed an entire complex of ancient structures, bounded to the south by the old thoroughfare.
