A little history
Avon is mentioned as a parish as early as 839 in a charter of Louis le Pieux. Forming with Fontainebleau a conurbation surrounded by the forest, the history of the two towns was often linked, but historians considered Avon to predate its neighbour, until 2012 when a Gaulish village dating from between thirty and two hundred and fifty years before Christ was uncovered beneath one of the squares of the château. The gare d'Avon-Fontainebleau opened in 1846, and the viaduct was inaugurated by the future Napoléon III in September 1849. From 1885 to 1890, an American-made steam road train of the "Scotte" brand ran between the station and the château, without giving real satisfaction.
