Massat covers 44.7 km², lies between 598 and 1,941 m above sea level and had 749 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Massat (pronounced [masat], Occitan, Maçat) is a French commune, situated in the département of Ariège in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Couserans, a land with Gascon roots structured around the course of the Salat. Exposed to a mountain climate, it is drained by the Arac, Agouelle Galy, the Canadelle, the ruisseau de Bagen, the ruisseau de Liers, the ruisseau de Neyert and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Traversed during the Palaeolithic era by cave-dwelling tribes who left some traces in the decorated caves of the Ker, the valleys of Massat, wild and isolated, were not populated until the 11th century. From the 1970s onwards, the arrival of neo-rural settlers slowly reversed this trend. The commune of Massat alone saw its population grow by 16.4% in four years and the average age fall by eight years. This situation sometimes gives rise to certain difficulties of cohabitation between the new arrivals and the traditional population.
