Marle, the town
Marle covers 13.8 km², lies between 75 and 140 m above sea level and had 2,229 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Marle, known locally as Marle-sur-Serre, is a commune of France located in the département of Aisne, in the région of Hauts-de-France.
A little history
The town was pillaged and burned by the English in 1339 and in 1525, and besieged in the intervening period by Charles VII in 1441. The town was ransacked by the Spanish in 1650. Marle, formerly known as Malain or Male with a strong emphasis on the first and long syllable ma, was formerly a bonne ville, that is to say a fortified town encircled by ramparts, defending the surrounding area. It should not be forgotten, as its recent coat of arms shows, that Marle is the name of an ancient seigneury erected as a comté in 1413 for Robert de Bar, which belonged successively to the Houses of Coucy, Bar, Luxembourg-Saint-Pol, Bourbon-Vendôme and Mazarin.
