A little history
Known by the name of Marinicum in the Middle Ages, the town is said to have been founded by a knight returning from the Crusades. This would explain the presence of the crescent moon on the town's coat of arms. A mandatory crossing point for traversing the Giffre via the « vieux pont » (1788), Marignier grew in importance with the establishment of the railway line leading to Chamonix and the opening of the gare de Marignier on 1st June 1890. It was notably equipped with the telegraph and became one of the most important towns in the valley.
