Le Crès [lə kʁɛs] (in Occitan Lo Crèç [lu 'krɛs]) is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Hérault in the Occitanie region, forming part of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Salaison, the ruisseau de Cassagnoles and by two other watercourses. Le Crès is an urban commune with 9,226 inhabitants in 2023, having experienced a sharp rise in population since 1962.
A little history
The earliest traces of human life in the commune date back to the Neolithic period (-3800). During the Ancien Régime, Le Crès formed a single parish with Castelnau-le-Lez, under the successive names of Castelnau-lès-Montpellier and Castelnau-Le Crès. At the beginning of the 19th century, the village of Le Crès, isolated from that of Castelnau by scrubland, developed and acquired facilities associated with the commune, the parish priest in 1830, a communal school, its cemetery, and so on. The inhabitants requested the establishment of Le Crès as a commune in 1846 and 1849, and finally obtained this on 30 September 1872 with a presidential decree by Adolphe Thiers.
