Lattes is a French commune situated in the south-east of the département of Hérault in the Occitanie region, to the south of Montpellier. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Lez, the Mosson, the Lironde, the Rieucoulon and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, two Natura 2000 sites (the étangs palavasiens and the étang de l'Estagnol), two protected areas (the étang du Méjean and the étangs Palavasiens) and four natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
During the Iron Age (8th to 2nd century BC), Lattes constituted one of the principal oppida of Mediterranean Celtic territory. In antiquity, an indigenous site existed at Lattara in connection with the Etruscans, the Greeks, and then the Romans. A protohistoric village existed in the area now called la Cougourlude. It was occupied in the 6th and 5th centuries before our era (between approximately 550 and 475 BC) and was situated on both banks of a course of the Lironde, at a crossroads with a thoroughfare, and extended over a larger area than those of the neighbouring lagoonal settlements.
