Lacaune [la.ko.n] (in Occitan La Cauna [la 'kaw.no̞]) is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Tarn, in the Occitanie region, in the Massif central on the monts de Lacaune. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Lacaunais, a collection of plateaux where the rearing of dairy ewes is predominant. Exposed to a mountain climate, it is drained by the Gijou, the Toudoure, the Ruisseau de Falcou, the Ruisseau de Gijoussel, the Ruisseau de Vernoubre, the Rieufrech, the rivière Caunaise, the ruisseau de la Grande Vergne, the ruisseau de Peyre Male, the ruisseau de Ramières and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The medieval charters of Lacaune are brought together in Le livre vert de Lacaune, written in Occitan by the abbé Joseph Gautrand. From 1910 to 1962, the line from Castres to Murat on metre gauge, operated by the Chemins de fer départementaux du Tarn, served the commune. From January 1942, by decision of the prefect of Toulouse, Lacaune became a centre of assigned residence for individuals whose conduct, attitude, nationality or faith constituted factors of discontent or unease within the population. Until 1944, 650 Jews were assigned there.
