La Roche-sur-Foron (formerly known as La Roche) is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Savoie, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It forms part of the cross-border conurbation of the Grand Genève. An urban centre of the communauté de communes du pays Rochois, the commune had 11,348 inhabitants in 2023, making it the fourteenth largest town in Haute-Savoie by number of inhabitants.
A little history
According to the deductions of contemporary historians, the site of la Roche appears to have been home to a fortified settlement at a very early stage, probably as far back as prehistoric times. It was taken over by the Burgondes in the 10th century, owing to its strategic advantages. This mountain plateau, backed by the col d'Évires and easy to defend, commands a largely unobstructed view over the valley of the Arve and the Lake Geneva basin. Their presence in the surrounding area is attested from the 5th and 7th centuries. However, the first recorded mentions of occupation of the site date back only to the early 12th century.
