Jonzac covers 13.1 km², lies between 26 and 87 m above sea level and had 3,602 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Jonzac is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the southern part of the département of Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its inhabitants are called the Jonzacais and Jonzacaises. Bathed by the Seugne, which flows through it in a meander, the town originally developed on two hills on the right bank, the monts Balaguier and Montguimar, where its two principal monuments stand, the église Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais and the château, one of whose towers serves as a belfry and is visible from afar.
A little history
Numerous prehistoric remains have been found in the commune. The recent discovery of a Mousterian site at the lieu-dit Chez Pinaud proves that Neanderthal men took shelter not far from the meanders of the Seugne. It is the second known Neanderthal site, after Chagyrskaya (Siberian Altai), to reveal bone tools. These are as numerous as those made of flint, and very varied, including hammerstones, knives, scrapers, chisels and smoothers.
