Vaux-sur-Mer (pronounced [vo.syʁ.mɛʁ]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its inhabitants are known as Vauxois and Vauxoises. Located at the heart of the Royannais, in the presqu'île d'Arvert, at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, this seaside resort on the côte de Beauté forms part of the western suburbs of Royan.
A little history
The occupation of the commune's territory is probably very ancient, as two dolmens (now disappeared) were still being recorded there at the end of the 19th century. Remains of underground passages dating from the Neolithic period and serving as refuges for people at the end of Prehistory have also been discovered in the commune. Later, during the Roman period, several Roman villæ were established at Pontaillac, Bernezac, and Vessac. Their owners planted vines and exploited the surrounding forests and marshes.
