Royan is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its inhabitants are called the Royannais and the Royannaises. The main town of the Côte de Beauté and the Royannais with 19,425 inhabitants in 2023, at the heart of an agglomeration of 40,517 inhabitants and an aire d'attraction of 74,917 inhabitants in the same year, Royan is above all one of the main seaside resorts on the French Atlantic coast, endowed with five fine sandy beaches, a marina capable of accommodating more than 1,000 boats, and an active fishing port.
A little history
Royan was founded during Late Antiquity, probably around the 5th century. From that period, two distinct urban nuclei developed. Saint-Pierre, a farming village perched on a plateau overlooking the estuary of the Gironde, and the village of Roianum, set on the plateau de Foncillon, a strategic headland bordered by the waters of the estuary. From the 11th century onwards, Royan was fortified by the seigneurs de Didonne. It became an English stronghold during the Hundred Years War, and the Prince Noir granted the town its first privileges. It was henceforth governed by a college of twelve échevins and twelve councillors.
