Rochefort, also known as Rochefort-sur-Mer, is a commune in the south-west of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called les Rochefortais and les Rochefortaises. Rochefort is established in a meander of the Charente, entirely on the right bank of the river, which places it in the former province of Aunis.
A little history
The name Rochefort is first mentioned alongside that of its lords, such as Hugo dominus Rocafortis (also written S. Hugonis de Rocaforte), who appears, well after his death, in a notice of 1096 accompanying a deed of donation made by Guillaume le Troubadour, duc d'Aquitaine, to the abbaye de Saint-Jean-d'Angély. From the mid-thirteenth century onwards, the more numerous texts written in French simply mention the name Rochefort, attested in 1250. From that time, this name being commonplace, it was decided to specify the geographical position of the castle placed on a fortified rock at the edge of the Charente, whose traffic it watched over, and the name of the site was then written Rochefort-sur-Charente.
