Aytré is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Aytrésiens. Aytré is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean with its wide bay and its beach of more than 2 km.
A little history
Aytré is the site of an important archaeological discovery. Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of an immense building, almost 50 metres long and around twenty metres wide, dating from the middle Neolithic period (4500 to 4000 years before Christ). It is thought to be the first structure of this kind discovered in France. The Aytré site was occupied from Antiquity, at least from the 1st century of the Christian era, as evidenced by the wall of Gallo-Roman origin discovered on the place des Charmilles as well as an engraved urn in grey clay dating from the 1st century, found during urban renovation works around 1988.
