Saint-Georges-de-Didonne (pronounced [sɛ̃.ʒɔʁʒ.də.di.dɔn]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime and the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Georgeais and the Saint-Georgeaises.
A little history
The earliest traces of human occupation are very ancient, as evidenced by the remains of a fortified camp at Boube, to the north of the commune, dated to the Peu-Richardien period (late Neolithic, approximately 5,000 years ago). Characteristic of this civilisation, it occupied a strategic site overlooking the marshes of Belmont (which then formed a vast marine gulf) and comprised a series of ditches, fortified gates known as "pinces de crabe" and an enclosure, in the manner of the neighbouring camps of Semussac, Cozes and Barzan. Traces of Gallo-Roman villæ were recorded in the 19th century at the level of the pointe de Suzac and at Vallières, during a partial collapse of the cliff in 1840.
