A little history
A cemetery, situated at les Bouchôleurs not far from the current cemetery, attests to a human presence in the Merovingian era. From the 11th century, or even the 10th century, the fortress of Castrum Allionis, then the capital of the Aunis, stood on the Pointe du Cornard, today submerged beneath the waves. It was a fortress belonging to the Comte du Poitou (active at Angoulins, and in Ré from the 10th century. The church at Angoulins depends on the abbaye St-Pierre de Bourgueil, founded in 990 by Emma de Blois, daughter of le Tricheur and wife of the Comte Guillaume Fièrebrace), entrusted to the family of the Èble(s) and the Isembert.
