Saintes is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime, of which it is a sub-prefecture, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Saintais and the Saintaises. The second urban centre of the département after La Rochelle, this medium-sized town has 25,363 inhabitants (2023) and is at the head of an urban unit of 29,871 inhabitants and the second catchment area of Charente-Maritime with 80,997 inhabitants (2023).
A little history
"At last freed from the pleasant ties that held us, we leave the soft delights of Bordeaux and draw near to the town of the Santons, in a nearby countryside." Ausone, Épître au rhéteur Axius Paulus, 4th century. Traces of ditches and ceramic remains dating from the final period of the Neolithic (-2900 to -2500 before the Christian era), located near the lieu-dit of Diconche, bear witness to the early occupation of the present-day communal territory by the people of the Peu-Richard civilisation. In 2005, excavations carried out at Petit Chadignac revealed the presence of a Neolithic camp as well as enclosures from the early La Tène period.
