Saint-Palais-sur-Mer (pronounced [sɛ̃.pa.lɛ.syʁ.mɛʁ]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Palaisiens and the Saint-Palaisiennes. A seaside resort that grew rapidly at the end of the 19th century, Saint-Palais-sur-Mer is a residential commune on the near western outskirts of Royan, the second largest town in the canton of La Tremblade.
A little history
The site of the present-day commune of Saint-Palais appears to have been occupied for a considerable time, as attested by the remains of underground passages dating from the Neolithic period and used as shelters by humans at the end of prehistory, discovered within the commune, as well as some remains from the Gallo-Roman period found during the construction of the sewage treatment plant. It is not until the 11th century, however, that the first written record of the town is found, through the mention of the église Saint-Pallais (Sanctus Palladius), seat of a parish dependent on the abbaye de Vaux.
