A little history
The town of Guise, the outlying capital of the Thiérache, developed in the shadow of a powerful castle built on the heights above it. The land of Guise was designated a comté from the 13th century and was elevated to a duché-pairie in 1528. The seigneurs de Guise, comtes and later ducs de Guise, came from a cadet branch of the maison de Lorraine. The forteresse de Guise commands the river Oise.
