Gerzat is a French commune situated in the département of Puy-de-Dôme, in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The commune, whose population in 2023 was 10,335 inhabitants known as the Gerzatois and the Gerzatoises, is situated in the north-east suburbs of Clermont-Ferrand and forms part of the unité urbaine and aire d'attraction of Clermont-Ferrand and of Clermont Auvergne Métropole.
A little history
Cardial ware culture (early Neolithic), typical of the south of France but also present in Auvergne and the Lyon region, is attested at the site of the Parc logistique de Gerzat. Gerzat was a Celtic settlement established around the Bédat (the Celts took possession of an ancient lake). A fortified town in the Middle Ages, its walls have today largely disappeared. On 21 June 1944, a unit of the German Luftwaffe directed by the Gestapo of Clermont-Ferrand and French collaborators carried out the Rafle de Gerzat (21 juin 1944).
