Riom covers 32 km², lies between 314 and 505 m above sea level and had 18,820 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Riom (pronounced [ʁjɔ̃] or [ʁijɔ̃]) is a French commune situated in the département of Puy-de-Dôme, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It has its own aire and unité urbaine which is part of the aire d'attraction of Clermont-Ferrand. Situated to the north of Auvergne, the town was, from 1210, capital of the Terre d'Auvergne and then of the duché d'Auvergne.
A little history
Until 1531, the date of the annexation of Auvergne by the French crown, Riom was the capital of the duché d'Auvergne, one of the Auvergnat feudal principalities. The town is of Gallo-Roman origin, Ricomagus, meaning "riche marché". During the intense feudalism of Auvergne from the year one thousand, the town grew around the collegiate church of Saint-Amable, the local saint, who was the object of pilgrimages. In the 14th century, the town benefited from the patronage of Jean, duc de Berry, who rebuilt the palais des ducs d'Auvergne and the Sainte-Chapelle.
