A little history
The origins of Cournon-d'Auvergne date back at least to the Gallo-Roman period, as attested by archaeological remains discovered on the commune's territory. The name Cournon (from the Latin Cornonem or Curnonem) appears for the first time in mediaeval charters before 1244. The etymology of the name may derive from the Gaulish cornu (horn, angle), in reference to the strategic position of the locality at the confluence of the Allier and the Auzon. In the Cassini map (around 1777) and in the carte d'état-major, the commune was called Cournon.
