Gannat is a French commune, situated in the Allier département in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. A centralising bureau of the canton and a sub-prefecture until 1926, the commune had 5,610 inhabitants in 2023. It contains a medieval château and two principal churches, Sainte-Croix de Gannat, in the town centre, which possessed a ninth-century evangeliary, and Saint-Étienne, in the faubourg of the same name.
A little history
The oldest traces discovered at Gannat date back some twenty-three million years. They are brachytheres, in other words rhinoceroses from the end of the Oligocene and the beginning of the Miocene. Gannat, whose western heights bordered the tropical lake that covered the Limagne, appears to have been a veritable cemetery for these animals, so much so that multitudes of fossilised bones are found there. Fish, reptiles, tortoises and crocodiles, gallinaceous birds, mammals, marsupials, insectivores, rodents and carnivores are also found there.
