Sur le plan historique et culturel, la commune fait partie du pays d'Olmes, haut lieu de la tragédie cathare alliant des paysages d'une extrême diversité. Exposée à un climat océanique altéré, elle est drainée par l'Hers-Vif, le ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas, le ruisseau de Malard et par divers autres petits cours d'eau.
