Étaules (pronounced [e.tol]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime and the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Étaulais and the Étaulaises. Located at the heart of the presqu'île d'Arvert and the Royannais, on the continental fringe of the Côte de Beauté and on the edge of the famous oyster-farming basin of Marennes-Oléron, this small town in the "grande banlieue" to the west of Royan has experienced constant and sustained growth for nearly thirty years (its population rising from 1,413 inhabitants in 1990 to 2,667 inhabitants in 2020).
A little history
The ancient settlement of the commune's territory is attested by the presence of tumuli and dolmens, such as that of the Grosse-Borne, not far from Chaillevette. At the heart of the marais de Saint-Augustin, a former marine gulf today filled by alluvial deposits, the île de Brèze has revealed traces of no fewer than six salt-production sites dating from the second Iron Age (Tène I and Tène III). The most important, situated at the lieu-dit "La pointe de Fauche", was explored during excavations carried out between 1966 and 1976. It covers nearly 800 square metres, and has revealed numerous ceramic fragments, remains of small vessels in which sea water was heated until evaporation.
