Its inhabitants are called the Étaulais and the Étaulaises. Located at the heart of the presqu'île d'Arvert and the Royannais, on the continental fringe of the Côte de Beauté and on the edge of the famous oyster-farming basin of Marennes-Oléron, this small town in the "grande banlieue" to the west of Royan has experienced constant and sustained growth for nearly thirty years (its population rising from 1,413 inhabitants in 1990 to 2,667 inhabitants in 2020).
