Étaples (sometimes called Étaples-sur-Mer) is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Étaplois. It is a member of the communauté d'agglomération des Deux Baies en Montreuillois.
A little history
The location occupied today by the town of Étaples shows traces of human presence dating back to the Palaeolithic. Certain flint tools discovered on the site of Bagarre are approximately 240,000 years old. From the Hallstatt period, in the Iron Age (800 years before Jesus Christ), numerous sites of Gaulish settlement are found along the coast and in the dunes bordering the north-west of the town. Although the site was occupied at the beginning of the first millennium of our era by the Romans, the town itself was probably founded by the Franks who invaded the Morinie during the 4th and 5th centuries.
