Lens, the town

Lens covers 11.7 km², lies between 27 and 71 m above sea level and had 32,920 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Lens (prononcé) is a French commune, sub-prefecture of the département of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region. Although it is only the 4th largest town in the département and the 18th in the region with its 32,920 inhabitants, its urban area is one of the most densely populated territories in France. The commune is the seat of the communauté d'agglomération de Lens-Liévin, which brings together 36 communes and has 242,591 inhabitants as of 2022.

A little history

In 1415, Henri de Récourt dit de Lens, Jean de Récourt dit de Lens and Philippe de Récourt dit de Lens fought and were killed at the bataille d'Azincourt. It was in 1526, during the rise of Spain in Europe, that the town of Lens passed into the hands of the King of Spain and thus became part of the Spanish Netherlands. It would take the siège de Lens in 1647 and then the Grand Condé and the bataille de Lens, on 20 August 1648, for the beginning of the Spanish decline in the region to be seen. This battle enabled Mazarin to sign the traités de Westphalie, bringing the Thirty Years War to an end.
