Saint-Omer [sɛ̃.t‿omɛʁ] is a French commune, sub-prefecture of the département of Pas-de-Calais, in the Hauts-de-France region. With a population of 14,382 inhabitants in 2023, it is the 11th most populous town in Pas-de-Calais. It is also the most populous town in its attraction area, which has 116,507 inhabitants in 2023.
A little history
Since the end of the Tertiary era and through the glacial periods, a marine transgression (Dunkerque II) submerged the land in a zone corresponding to the triangle formed today by Calais, Dunkerque and Saint-Omer, and the deltas of the Aa and the Yser merged. The coastline was occupied by the Morins, a Gaulish people of Celtic origin whose capital was Tarvenna (now Thérouanne). It was probably at or near Saint-Omer that Jules César built Portus Itius, from which in 55 and 54 BC he set out to invade Bretagne (present-day Great Britain).
