Calais covers 33.5 km², lies between 0 and 18 m above sea level and had 67,571 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Calais is a French commune, sub-prefecture of the département of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Calaisiens and the Calaisiennes. The town of Calais is the most populous in the département, although it is not the county town, that function falling to Arras.
A little history
Its proximity to England makes Calais a strategic military stronghold. The history of the town is marked by several sieges, a first in 1346 during the Hundred Years War, when King Édouard III of England chose Calais to land in France (the town then passing under English control), a second in 1436 when Philippe le Bon, duc de Bourgogne, attacked the English in an attempt to liberate Calais. In 1558 the Siège de Calais took place, in which France finally succeeded in reclaiming the town after it had remained under English occupation for more than two centuries. In 1595, Calais was captured by the Spanish, who returned it two years later.
