Espéraza, in Occitan Esperasan, is a French commune situated in the south-west of the département of l'Aude, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Razès, a historically vast pays which today encompasses only the hills of the Malepère and the bas Razès in the centre and south, bounded by the pays de Sault. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Aude, the ruisseau de Fa, the ruisseau de Couleurs, the ruisseau de Granès and two other watercourses.
A little history
In January 959, the église Saint-Jean d'Espéraza belonged to the monastery of Camon. The other church, dedicated to Notre-Dame, was given by the comte Roger le Vieux de Carcassonne and Razès to the archbishop of Narbonne in 1007. In 1154, the knights Raimon de Niort and Guilhem d'Alaigne held the seigneurie of Espéraza. It appears that the place belonged to the same family from at least the year 1000 until the end of the 13th century.
