Denain is a French commune in the suburbs of Valenciennes, situated on the canalised course of the Escaut, in the département du Nord and the Hauts-de-France region. A former «capitale du charbon et de l'acier», the town is situated at the heart of the Nord coalfield. In total, the 15 fosses de Denain produced 34 million tonnes of coal.
A little history
The Abbaye des Dames Chanoinesses, founded at Denain in the year 764 then burned and pillaged by the Vikings in 851, was rebuilt and then destroyed again during the French Revolution. A Norwegian-type sword, found in the Escaut at Denain and now kept in the municipal museum, bears witness to the passage of the Vikings through the region. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the bataille de Denain took place on 24 July 1712 and was won by the French troops commanded by the maréchal de Villars. In 1800, Denain was a village of 900 inhabitants.
