Daumazan-sur-Arize is a French commune situated in the north of the Ariège department in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Pédaguès, a former designation replaced in the 21st century by the geographical name Terrefort ariégeois, made up of the terreforts of Pamiers and Saverdun, on the left bank of the Ariège. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Arize, the ruisseau de l'Argain, the ruisseau de Montbrun and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Like most of what is now the Ariège, Daumazan, before the formation of the comté de Foix, belonged to the comte de Carcassonne. A charter of customary rights was granted to the inhabitants by the comte de Foix in 1249. Certain vestiges allow us to believe that Daumazan was an important market town in the Middle Ages. From that period there still survive the capérades (covered walkways), half-timbered houses and shopfront facades.
