Cuxac-Cabardès résulte de sa fusion en 1790-1794 avec Goutarende.Sources référencées « Cass. » dans le texte, Des villages de Cassini aux communes d'aujourd'hui, sur cassini.ehess.fr Sur le plan historique et culturel, la commune fait partie de la Montagne Noire, un massif montagneux constituant le rebord méridional du Massif central. Exposée à un climat océanique altéré, elle est drainée par la Dure, le Rieu Sec et par divers autres petits cours d'eau.
