A little history
The ancient Cantilia, mentioned on the Peutinger map, which became Chantelle-la-Vieille, today part of the commune of Monestier, has Gaulish origins and, owing to its location where several roads crossed to ford the Bouble, it already constituted a significant settlement before the Roman conquest. The great road from Brest to Clermont/Marseille crossed various secondary routes there. It appears that the army of Vercingétorix destroyed the town at the time of the war against Jules César, but the town was rebuilt during the Roman peace.
