Chaillac, the town
Chaillac covers 59.8 km², lies between 122 and 253 m above sea level and had 1,021 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Chaillac [ʃajak] is a French commune situated in the département of l'Indre, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Exposed to a degraded oceanic climate, it is drained by the Anglin, the Allemette, the Bel Rio, the Portefeuille, the Vavret and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of one Natura 2000 site and five natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The château de Brosse, situated on the former commune of Brosse, was the possession of the viscounts of Brosse, who were powerful during the Middle Ages and even had their own coinage in the 11th century. However, the village created around the château, situated in a dead end, never competed with that of Chaillac, which is of ancient origin, especially after being destroyed by the Anglo-Poitevins in 1370. The commune of Chaillac, established by the French Revolution, absorbed those of Brosse, la Lemette, Loissière, Milloux and les Pérelles as early as the years 1790 to 1794. The subsoil of Chaillac is rich in fluorite and baryte.
