Cagnac-les-Mines (in Occitan Canhac de las Minas) is a French commune situated in the département of Tarn, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Albigeois, a natural agricultural region corresponding to the surroundings of the town of Albi. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Vère, the ruisseau de la Mouline and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The hamlet of Cagnac-le-vieux, which can be located near the pits of Campgrand (the present-day musée de la mine de Cagnac), to the south-west (see parcel 284 on the cadastral plan below), consists of the old château and a few old houses surrounded by a rampart protected by a moat and pierced by a single gateway. The following is what the correspondent of the bulletin la Semaine religieuse de l'archidiocèse d'Albi wrote. Cagnac once had its château surrounded by old houses, on a hillock whose height has nothing intimidating about it. Its keep, it seems, rivalled that of Castelnau-de-Lévis and was forced to yield before its rival. Many a quarrel among lords put the peasants on alert.
