A little history
Braine existed before 561, as it was the favourite court (Königspfalz, royal palatinate) of Clotaire Ier. The discovery of a cemetery at Breny used between the Late Empire and the 8th century could show that Braine is not the site of the villa Brennacum. Dagobert, son of King Chilpéric Ier and Frédégonde, who died at Braine in 580 from dysentery, was buried in the église Saint-Denis de Paris. Flodoard records that in 931, followers of Herbert de Vermandois who had left Reims stormed the château de Braine (castrum) and destroyed it, as it was occupied by men of Hugues le Grand, who had previously taken it from the bishop of Rouen.
