Bourg-Madame (in Catalan La Guingueta d'Ix) is a French commune situated in the département des Pyrénées-Orientales, in the région Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies in the Cerdagne, a high plain at an average altitude of 1,200 metres, stretching from east to west over around forty kilometres between Mont-Louis and Bourg-Madame. Exposed to a mountain climate, it is drained by the Sègre, the Riu Rahur, the Rec de la Jaca, the Rec de les Vernedes, the Torrent de Nèrvols and by another watercourse.
A little history
Originally, La Guingueta d'Ix (les Guinguettes d'Hix in French) was a hamlet of the town of Ix (or Hix in French), originally part of the county of Barcelona (Comtat de Barcelona), situated near the new border drawn between France and Spain following the treaties of the Pyrénées of 1659 and of Llivia of 1660. Taking advantage of the development of cross-border trade and smuggling, a large proportion of the inhabitants of Ix moved to the hamlet of les Guinguettes d'Hix, which eventually became more populous than the original village.
